I decided that I wanted to have some fall themed tea towels, but didn’t really like the ones I found in stores, or wasn’t about to pay what they were asking for them! So I headed to the craft store to get the things I needed to make my own.

Tea towels in desired colors, fabric, large rick-rack, silk leaves, and a coordinating thread. (In hindsight, I would have picked up iron on interfacing so the fabric wouldn’t shift around as much.)

Wash and dry the fabric and towels. Iron them, and if you get the brand that I happened to get, iron them again…and again…and again, trying to get those wrinkles out!!!

Pin the silk leaves to your fabric to use as templates. I stacked a number of layers of fabric together so I only had to cut once for each shape. It really helped to have scissors with a needle nose tip to be able to get in those tight corners.

Sew on the rick-rack, if you are using it. I almost wasn’t able to use it, I had no idea that it would melt if I ironed it!

Sew around the edges of your leaves. I like the frayed, “deconstructed” look, so I wasn’t worried about turning the edges under. I did, however, use a stitch on my machine the sewed an edge around it.

There you have it! I am using these for decorative purposes only. They won’t need to be washed…except that I got a spot on the tan towel while I was sewing it. Of course, I didn’t notice it until I was uploading the pictures. *sigh* You still get the idea though!
