For my first time ever (which is not really saying much, since I am a self-proclaimed gardening novice) I am growing spinach in my garden. I planted it later than anything else because I first tried lettuce and that didn’t work out too well. I only got a few heads, so I moved them and decided to plant spinach. I don’t have a ton of it, but it seems to be doing well. For the last several days, I kept walking by and thinking it was time for me to do something with it. Having no idea whatsoever to do, I googled it. I love google. I found instructions for how to prepare it for freezing. You may also can it, but let’s just be honest here. Gross. So, I followed the instructions for freezing it and it was remarkably easy and I thought it would be helpful to document it so that you can do it in your own kitchen!

First, pick your spinach leaves- the website said to cut them with scissors, so that's what I did.

Next, wash your spinach well. I filled a dishpan with cold water and dumped the leaves in and swished them around with my hand, removed the leaves...and then did it again until the water was clean.

Most of the time, I want chopped spinach for whatever meal I'm using it for...so I chopped mine even though the website I was reading didn't say anything about this.

Bring about 1/2" of water to boil in a large pot. Add in your spinach.

Simmer the spinach in the water for 5 minutes, stirring often.

Pour your cooked spinach into a strainer in the sink. Press to remove as much of the water as you can. But you probably want to wait a few minutes for it to cool. Because it's hot. Not that I know that from experience or anything.

Divide spinach into portions that you would use at any given time. Put into labeled freezer bags. Make flat, squeeze air out and seal. Freeze. Done!
