One of the things that I KNOW that I’ve lacked in over the years is intentionality. I’ve always been a stay at home mom, but that doesn’t automatically mean that I was always intentional about teaching and molding my children throughout the days, or that I was automatically really good about making homemade dinners from scratch every night or keeping a family schedule.
In fact, I have failed over the years at all three of those things. But, like everyone else, I am in process. I am in process of a lot of things, but two of the biggest things that I have been working on are; discipline- learning to have it, and intentionally- having a purpose behind what I do, and knowing what it is.
The other day, I read THIS post from Lindsay at Passionate Homemaking. Although she’s younger, she is far ahead of me in some areas and I appreciated this post by her. It was all about making a personal mission statement. Not having any idea what a personal mission statement WAS, it was helpful to be able to read through what it was, how to create it, and what she wrote for hers.
I have not totally finished mine yet. But the process was so helpful for me to just sit down and think about these things instead of just floating through my days. So, in hopes that it might help you guys out as well, I have decided to show you what I’ve been working on.
First, I defined each role that I play. Most of these I stole right from Lindsay, but the descriptions, I changed to fit me.
My Roles
Me; Kristi; A human- In order to fulfill every other role that God has called me to, I need to make sure that I am nurturing and taking care of myself. I need: time with God, prayer time, sleep, time with friends and husband, time for personal care and prioritizing eating healthy and exercising.
Wife- I am first and foremost Josh’s wife. I was created to be a helper for him and to learn to walk along side of him. In order to do this well, I need to invest my time and energy in really knowing him and his needs and make them a priority in my life.
Parent/Educator- God has entrusted me with five of His children. They are truly His and He has loaned them to me for a time. As their mother, it is my job to love, nurture, encourage, train, teach and challenge them towards growth.
Homemaker- My job after nurturing relationships, is to maintain our home. It is my job to bring peace to our home along with beauty, joy, order and fun.
Daughter and Ambassador of Christ- I want to make sure that above all, my life reflects the love of Jesus to the world around me. To me, this means joyfully serving and fulfilling the above roles first. Secondly I need to be in tune with God’s heart and be willing to listen and follow His plan for my life- even when it is hard, uncomfortable, or makes other people think I’m crazy.
Next, you are supposed to come up with a main goal for each role… but I’m still working on that part.
After that, figure out how to accomplish these goals.
Me; Kristi; A human-
Daily (or several times a week) spend time in Bible reading/study and prayer
Start a Thanksgiving journal (I have decided that every time I read the Bible, I will write down a verse that spoke to me for that day and 5 things that I am thankful for.)
Exercise 3x a week
Pay attention to what I eat- plan healthy dinners
Start a bedtime routine to make sleep easier
Talk to a friend at least once a week
Spend time with Josh after kids are in bed
Wife
Spend time with Josh each night after kids are in bed
Be willing to be transparent and vulnerable with him
Date nights twice a month
Get away weekends twice a year
Ask him often about his needs and check in with how I’m doing in meeting them
Pray for him regularly
Parent/Educator
Make a schedule for how to spend one on one time regularly with each kid
Ask questions at dinner time
Focus on training and teaching them- practice things together
Pray for them regularly
Regular devotions and/or Bible stories
Pray with them
Begin and/or continue teaching life skills such as cooking, cleaning, laundry…
Homemaker
Maintain daily cleaning schedules
Have a morning and an evening routine
Light candles
Take note of rooms/areas that are in need of maintenance and work them into the budget
1x every season go through kids’ clothes and get rid of outgrown things
Put scripture on the walls (does anyone have any suggestions for this? Vinyl letters are expensive!)
Weekly meal planning and shopping including coupon shopping trips
Daughter and Ambassador of Christ
Pray continually about Courageous Homekeeping and follow God’s lead
Write 2-3 posts per week
Pray for God to bring people into my life that need His love
Have people over for dinner or other at least 2x a month
Pray that God will guide us in the decision to adopt
After you get all this stuff written out, you are then supposed to make it look nice and either hang it somewhere on a wall, or make sure to re-read it often. I haven’t done that yet either.
So there you go! Have you ever made a personal mission statement?

I write on the bathroom mirrors in eyeliner/lip liner or lipstik=) this way we all see the scriuptures we are studying for the week!
