I store a lot of my pantry items in glass containers. They are better for you than plastic, keep bugs (sugar ants!!!) and critters out, and they look pretty too! As soon as I made the switch to baking gluten free I ran into a problem though. The various number of flours and starches all look the same. Something needed to be done or I would end up with 2 cups of baking soda instead of white rice flour! Blech! I have seen a lot of bloggers paint chalkboard paint on their containers, but I knew that I might want to use mine for something else someday. My labels needed to be removable. So I came up with this idea! I got shipping labels from the office supply store and chalkboard paint from the craft store. I learned a few things while spraying these. Make several light coats instead of one or two heavy coats. Also find something to weigh the edges of the papers down as they have a tendency to curl up. Make sure you spray outside because this stuff smells!!!You want to make sure that you have a thick enough layer to write on, but not too thick or it will crack. It was easier to write the labels while they were still flat on the paper than once it had been put on the container. Another trick that I learned years ago as a hostess for a local restaurant is to get your chalk damp. The lettering stands out better. The ‘rice’ on the left is dry, while the ‘almonds’ on they right isn’t dry yet. Now they are both dry!For my smaller containers I needed to cut the labels down to size,  so I pulled out my old scrapbooking punch and it worked great! (By the way, when I made apple sauce this fall we had a bunch of apple skins left over so I put them in the dehydrator and the boys love to munch on them!)You know, now that I am looking at this photo, I think I accidentally added my lentils into the split pea container. See, I really do need these labeled! This is before, what a mess! And after. Much better! They do wipe off quite easily, just don’t get them wet or the paint will dissolve off of the labels. There you go! DIY removable chalkboard labels! (You can click on any photo for a better view.)
